Laundry in the equestrian environment
Ensuring the well-being of horses and riders with regularly-maintained textiles is an essential point in the equestrian world.
Regular and appropriate washing of riding equipment (blankets, liner covers, saddle pads, gaiters, belts, etc.) limits the proliferation of bacteria and the risk of allergies or irritation for horses, and contributes to the comfort of riders as they practise their sport on a regular basis.
For stud farms, boarding stables, breeders or riding centres, the maintenance, cleaning, drying and disinfection of equestrian textiles, while preserving their original characteristics (breathability, waterproofing) and extending their lifespan, offer many advantages:

Why clean horses’ clothing regularly?

Using a domestic washing machine :
Accelerated wear and tear, poor performance, blocked pipes or deterioration of the drain pump (horsehair, dried mud, dung residue).
Use intensive wash programmes :
Standard programmes at too high a temperature, long cycles, intensive spinning.
Use unsuitable detergents:
With a high pH, which risks damaging the textiles, or adding fabric softener, which clogs pores and alters their original characteristics.
Storing textiles that are still damp after washing:
Which encourages the development of mould.
Use a dryer with standard programmes:
This could break the fibres and alter the waterproof qualities of the fabric.
What are the best practices to adopt?
- Wash cold or at a low temperature (30 – 40°C) to protect the technical qualities of the textiles and prevent shrinkage.
- Use products with a neutral pH.
- Regularly incorporate an impregnation treatment into the wash cycle to preserve the waterproof characteristics.
- Regularly disinfect textiles and accessories.
